Introduction As a technical professional, with extensive background in engineering, manufacturing, documentation and quality, I have determined that a number of Web Pages have done excellent jobs in providing general tips for those engaged in obtaining an ISO 9000 Certification. I beleive that many are providing the information as an effort to obtain consulting business. This is the free enterprise system at work and without securing business from the Web offerings, they would not be able to afford to provide the information. Based on the premise that value will be given for value recieved, I am providing this ISO infomation. Updates to this site will be made, dependent upon support for this site. Due to the year 2000 changes upcoming for the standard, I recommend learning about Total Quality Management (TQM). It is the basis for the new "Process Model". The decision was made by top management or your customers that an ISO
certification is needed. Rather that doing a ready, fire, aim, consider
what you are undertaking. There are a number of companies who have
successfully went through the certification process so it it should be easy.
Unfortuneatly the reality is that there are also a number of companies
that have failed along the way. An ISO implemetation is no different than
any other program or project. It takes planning, a coordinated effort

There are a number of educational and consultant's sites that offer information
on the basics of the ISO standard. Rather than provide the basics,

ISO 9000 Procedure Writing Information There are a few procedure writing tips and comments that are useful for those on the working end of the implementation. Click on ISO 9000 Procedure Writing Information to review them. Additionally, I also have provided a quick overview of what a Quality System Documentation Scheme looks like. Click on Quality System Documentation Overview to review the scheme. While many company's fear the use of consultant's, many registrar's auditors would prefer that you use one. The reason for this is the poor results many auditors have observed while doing pre-assessments on companies who tried to implement the standard on thier own. I have never used a consultant, however, recommend the pre-assessment option. Job descriptions are one of those items that people who have not been initiated via a Lead Auditor Course or more painfully, by an audit, don't do because they don't see the term job descriptions in the ISO 9000 Standard. There are a number of inter-related reasons a Registrar's Auditors expect them. This is one of those items where you either create job descriptions or put a number of employee's job responsibilities as they relate to quality into your procedures. From an implementation stand point, I have found it easier to put the job descriptions in the Human Resources Department as stand alone documents and keep them out of the procedures.

job descriptions to provide form and format for those whose who want to write

Development. Checklists are used by auditors, both internal and external, to verify that the critical aspects of the ISO standard are being met. I am not currently providing checklists at this time. If you are currently working with a Registrar, you may be able to obtain one from the Registrar's Lead Auditor, unless your Registrar is selling them (i.e. QMI/CSA was initially selling them for $ 100.00 U.S.) Most Registrar's checklists are generic. For internal auditor use, I recommend tailoring the checklists to your internal procedures since your internal auditors are really trying to audit your company's specific procedures. If you are looking for a short-cut to get your checklists put together, there are texts on checklists available.
