Background
This information is provided to aid in the safe and proper installation of Generator Systems. The rules typically apply to commercial or residential installatons. As a former Applications Engineer and Generator Product Manager for a Generator(Gen-Set)/Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) manufacturer, I discovered that generators are a wonderful thing to have, when needed, and unreliable if not properly maintained or installed.
Please read my Legal Page before using this information. This information is for educational puposes and not intended to be your installation instructions for putting in a system. Local codes and manufacturer's recommendations should always prevail when it comes to specific locations and pieces of equipment.
There are a number of codes one is required to comply with, based on the type of installation, fuel used and area the system is being installed. In short, every installation is different. Besides the problems associated with the authority having juristiction, the problems in finding the unique parts to do the installation also arise (i.e. Flexible exhaust sections, condensation traps, insulating wrap, etc.).
Note: Many local communities apply the national codes rather than create a local code. Some authorities having juristiction use national codes plus additional requirement, while others rewrite an entire code based on problems they have found(i.e. Chicago, New York, L.A.,,). Consult your local building permit approal authority to find out the specific codes used in your area.
My first recommendation is to find a Gen-Set Installer in your area who knows the codes. If you have a competent in-house maintence group and/or do your own work, it is recommended to work closely with the manufacturer or equipment dealer to obain your unique parts. This tutorial should at least give you an idea of what is required to perform an installation.
I am not selling Generators(Gen-Sets)/Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPSs), however, am aware of a number of persons in the business and one national installer network. I answer questions as time permits . One warning, whether doing an installation yourself or contracting - Gen-Set Installations are not inexpensive and a bad installation is even more expensive.
